Explanation:
The American Water Works Association (AWWA) celebrates the first full week in May as "Drinking Water Week", a nationally proclaimed observance. This year, Drinking Water Week is May 7-13, 2023. A focal point of the Department of Public Utilities (DPU) Drinking Water Week celebration is the awards ceremony for the DPU's annual "Drop Savers" Water Conservation Poster Contest.

The City of Hollywood has held this contest since 1994 for which thousands of water conservation posters are created by local K-12th grade students annually. Students learn water conservation information that they transform into pictures and slogans for the contest. Schools submit their student's best posters to the DPU, and staff select the top pieces from each grade category (K-1, 2-3, 4-5, 6-8 and 9-12) for the annual awards ceremony. Winning posters are displayed at City Hall and incorporated into a keepsake calendar. Students who place in the top three for their age group also receive electronic gift cards. First place posters from each category are sent on to the AWWA state competition where they can receive additional recognition and prizes. Hollywood has had numerous posters place in the state competition over the years, including one first and one third place winner last year.

Ali Parker, Public Utilities Outreach Coordinator, will be presenting the Awards at the May 3, 2023 Commission Meeting. The Awards are scheduled for 5 pm to allow teachers, students, and their families to attend.
