Explanation:
The Florida Department of Transportation ("FDOT") is focused on combating aggressive driving, and has made grant funding available to Florida law enforcement agencies to enforce speeding and aggressive driving laws. The Police Department submitted an application to FDOT to obtain grant funding. The City generates a high level of traffic each day due to the swell of workforce and tourist traffic, and the multiple major roadways which exist throughout the City. The City has experienced a significant and steady rise in the number of fatal traffic crashes and traffic accidents with bodily injuries between 2018 and 2020. Recently widened major roadways have allowed for an increase in traffic volume and aggressive driving. Current speed measurement and radar equipment in use by the Police Department is built with outdated technology. Speed measurement and radar equipment made with new technology allows officers to more efficiently, effectively and safely issue warnings and citations. There is presently no available funding in the City budget for the replacement of any future speed measurement devices. The acceptance of these grant funds does not require a contribution of matching funds and will incur no cost to the taxpayers of the City.
