Explanation:
The purpose of the Broward County Enhanced Marine Law Enforcement Grant program is to improve boating safety in Broward County by providing funds for the enhancement of Marine Law Enforcement and education. EMLEG funds allow for an additional 25 hours a week of enhanced marine patrols. The patrols are conducted during peak boating hours, holidays, weekends etc. and are conducted through Hollywood's portion of the ICW, North and South Lakes and all boat ramps along those waterways. During these enhanced patrols, emphasis is placed on marine education and boater safety. This is accomplished mainly through vessel safety checks which include but are not limited to the following: ensure the vessel and captain have proper documentation, the vessel is not over its maximum capacity of persons, there are a proper number of life jackets on board, the vessel is equipped with fire extinguishers, flares, horns and whistles and equipped with proper lighting. The boaters are also educated on safe operations while the boat is underway, i.e. allowing for and maintaining proper sight lines for the Captain, not distracting the Captain, remaining in the designated seating areas, observing posted speed limits and no wake zones, and all other applicable laws.
