Explanation:
In 2018, Melvin Smith filed a civil action against the City for damages arising out of an incident that allegedly occurred on or about April 8, 2015. In his civil action, Melvin Smith alleges that he was subjected to a false arrest and unnecessary force. Melvin Smith’s claim is for personal injuries.
The City Attorney and Melvin Smith’s attorney have negotiated a settlement in the amount of $225,000.00. If this settlement is approved by the City Commission, the monies will be paid from the City’s self-insurance fund.
The City Attorney recommends that the City Commission approve the negotiated settlement.
