Since 1994, the City has utilized U.S. Department of Interior's U.S. Geological Survey ("USGS"), Caribbean-Florida Water Science Center, for water resources investigations. USGS is an independent fact finding Federal agency that collects, monitors, analyzes, and provides scientific understanding about our natural resource conditions, issues, and problems.
The USGS's Cooperative Matching Funds Program is a cooperative program that is jointly funded by USGS and participating entities at a state, county and local level. The Cooperative Data Collection Program with USGS is a partnership for defining and improving the overall understanding of the water resources of the City and South Florida.
The program involves sampling measuring, recording, logging, reporting, and trending both surface water and ground water within the City. This data is collected to monitor water quality and availability related to the effects from rainfall, aquifer withdrawal and salt water intrusion. USGS activities involve monthly, quarterly, annual, and continuous monitoring of surface waters and ground water. The water levels, chlorides (salts) and conductivity are sampled, reported, and recorded into a database.
In order to proceed with such services from USGS this year, it is necessary to enter into the attached Joint Funding Agreement with USGS, Caribbean-Florida Water Center, United States Dept. of the Interior for the period of October 1, 2019 to September 30, 2020.
