Staff Recommends Approval of Attached Resolution.

 

Explanation:

On July 11, 2001, the City Commission passed and adopted Resolution No. R-2001-93, authorizing the creation of the Education Advisory Committee to obtain and review information regarding educational matters and support and promote quality education in order to make the educational opportunities in Hollywood the best available in the State of Florida.

 

Pursuant to Resolution No. R-2001-93, members must reside or work in Hollywood, or be known for their countywide interest in education.  Further, persons of diverse perspectives shall be represented on the Education Advisory Committee, including parents of school-age or pre-school-age children, educators, business people, and persons with a background and knowledge in child development and/or education-related fields.

 

Resolution R-2001-93 was subsequently amended by resolutions R-2002-241, R-2003-144, R-2003-373, R-2004-203, R-2005-299, R-2007-421, and R-2009-188, R-2011-143, R-2012-186, R-2013-088, and R-2015-180 thereby establishing the current committee composition with ten (10) Members, four (4) Teacher Members, and two (2) Student Alternate Members.  The Student Alternate members fill in for any regular member or teacher member who is absent at a meeting.    

 

There are two (2) Teacher Member positions expiring June 30, 2017:

                     Gilberto Amador

                     Carol Fischer

 

There is one (1) Member position vacant due to the removal of Kevin Minear for violation of the attendance policy.  This term expires June 30, 2019.

 

There is one (1) Member position vacant due to the removal of Julia Yaremchuck for violation of the attendance policy.  This term expires June 30, 2018.

 

There is one (1) Member position expiring June 30, 2017.

                     Allan Libero

 

 

There are two (2) Student Alternate Member positions expiring June 30, 2017:

                     Ryan Sherota

                     Max Wiederhorn

 

The City Clerk provided notice to the public that positions are available and solicited interest forms from citizens to fill available vacancies on the Education Advisory Committee.  Community Development staff provided notice to principals of Hollywood schools that two (2) Student Alternate Member positions are available. Thirteen (13) total qualified applications were received to fill the vacant and expiring terms.
