Title
Presentation By The Marine Advisory Board Regarding The Creation Of A Mooring Field In North Lake.
Body
Staff Recommends: Presentation by Marine Advisory Board
Explanation:
The Marine Advisory Board is recommending the City Commission consider constructing a mooring field in the mouth area of North Lake.
To provide some background on the issue of anchoring and the law that regulates it; prior to 2009-10 the law restricted anchoring in or along the waterways for more than one night unless it was for emergency purposes. That law was relaxed in 2009-10 to the current law, which allows anchoring anywhere outside of designated mooring areas. That means all of the boats in North Lake, South Lake and Sheridan Coves cannot be ticketed or told by law enforcement that they cannot anchor there.
On any given day in North Lake there are up to 20 boats anchored in North Lake. The city has no information on these boats and is not able to regulate them due to the current laws on anchoring.
In response to the large amount of vessels anchoring and sometime sinking in Sheridan Cove, the Broward County Parks and Recreation Division in conjunction with the Florida Inland Navigation District Waterway Assistance are creating a mooring field project in North Beach Park, Hollywood.
The Marine Advisory Board recommends that the City of Hollywood explore the possibility of constructing a mooring field in North Lake. A mooring will not only provide the City a new revenue source but also provide the ability to regulate those tied up to the moorings and eliminate anchoring in the North Lake area.
