Requesting approval of the attached Ordinance amending Chapter 151 Of The Code of Ordinances Entitled “Buildings” to require electric vehicle charging station infrastructure for new commercial and residential development.
As of May 2015, more than 500,000 highway-capable all-electric vehicles and light utility vehicles have been sold worldwide since 2008. The United States has the largest fleet of these vehicles in the world, with about 335,000 highway legal plug-in electric cars sold in the country since 2008, and representing about 40% of the global stock. As it is critical to the continued growth of Electric Vehicle (EV) usage, convenient and ample EV charging stations are required. To promote the installation of EV charging stations in the future, the Chief Civic Affairs Officer recommends that all new commercial and residential development be required to construct the infrastructure necessary for future installation of an electric car charging station. The Green Team Advisory Committee reviewed the recommendation and unanimously supported the requirement for EV charging station infrastructure. The Chief Civic Affairs Officer also met with the Chamber’s Governmental Affairs Committee and reviewed the recommendations; they had no objections.
