Explanation:
At the August 26, 2015 Commission meeting, Mayor Bober and Commissioner Callari requested the naming of the park located at 1900 to 2300 North 29th Avenue as “Charles F. Vollman Park”.
This is a new park in the area which has to be named. Charles F. Vollman (“Chuck”) was born September 16th, 1933 in Bellevue Hospital Manhattan, NY and raised in Long Beach and Forrest Hills NY. He attended Forrest Hills High School, graduating in 1951 and thereafter attending the University of Miami.
Chuck enlisted in the U.S. Army Security Agency in 1952 and was honorably discharged after serving 16 months as a Sergeant in the Korean War, and returned to civilian life and graduated TTI Miami.
Chuck subsequently married Betty Jean Sussman on June 3, 1956, and that same year, he became a member of the Jewish War Veterans Post 613 and served as Junior and Senior Vice Commanders and was editor of the Post newsletters and delegate to the Jewish National Convention.
Chuck reported to Washington, D. C. where he was hired by the Central Intelligence Agency and served tours in: Washington, D.C., the Panama Canal Zone; Lima, Peru; Tehran, Iran; Nicosia, Cyprus; and Athens, Greece. He resigned his position in 1964 from the CIA and returned to the United States to work in the family interior decorating business until 1970 when he was hired by Sears Roebuck and Company as a decorating consultant. During his 22 years of service at Sears he held positions as Regional Trainer, National Trainer and Sales Manager for all the Sears decorating stores in South Florida.
After retiring from Sears in 1992, he performed volunteer work and was on several boards for many organizations which included: member of the Sears Retirees, President of the Sears Retirees of South Florida, member of the Sears Retiree Advisory Council, President of the Genealogy Society of Broward County, Co-founder of the Park East Civic Association and was the webmaster for Park East Civic Association. Chuck served as President of the Hollywood Council Civic Association and was inducted into the Broward County Historical Commission of Pioneers.
Chuck worked on the Okomo trailer park project and was a founding member of the Patriotic Group of Hollywood. He additionally graduated from the Citizens Police Academy and was a member of the community Emergency Response Team.
In 2008, Chuck was honored with the Meritorious Service Award by the Hollywood City Commission and Fire Chief Virgil Fernandez for his service on the Citizens’ Emergency Response Team, and became the first recipient of the Hollywood Council of Civic Association’s highest award, the Charles F. Vollman Award, on April 2, 2008.
Throughout his life, Chuck demonstrated a passion for maintaining relationships with local neighbors and government officials alike. Chuck believed in building a strong society where dedication and integrity ensured that all measures, carried out in the name of the community by local neighbors and government officials, were executed with honor in order to be accepted by all with satisfaction. Chuck passed away on July 18, 2008.
The City Commission, by a 5/7 vote, must approve to exempt itself from the Procedures and name the park located at 1900 to 2300 North 29th Avenue as “Charles F. Vollman Park”.
