Explanation:

In 2008, the City of Hollywood adopted a Comprehensive Water Conservation Plan, which outlines a five-year strategy regarding implementation of several water savings initiatives.

WaterSense, a partnership program sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, (USEPA), indicates that toilets are the main source of water used in the home, accounting for nearly 30% of residential indoor water use, and inefficient or leaking toilets contribute to the water waste.

Replacing the existing, older, water-wasting toilets with WaterSense-certified models could save approximately 11,000 to 18,000 gallons per year per household, therefore, City of Hollywood residential customers could lower water consumption and lower their water and wastewater bills.

Developing efficient conservation practices and using water wisely to enhance our life can help our community avoid, or at least lessen, the likelihood of future water shortages.

Educating our residents on how to use water more efficiently will help preserve this finite resource for future generations and will help reduce future water and wastewater infrastructure costs.

On October 20, 2010, via Resolution R-2010-303, the  City of Hollywood City Commission implemented a Retrofit Toilet Rebate Program (the Program) for single families residences to help support a proactive approach towards the management of the City’s groundwater and surface water resources, and to promote conservation of water resources.

On February 6, 2013, via Resolution R-2013-033, the City of Hollywood City Commission expanded the Program to include multi-family dwellings.

The Administration recommends that the City Commission authorize the appropriate City Officials to expand the Retrofit Toilet Rebate Program to include commercial properties, in an estimated amount of $200,000.00.

Funding for water conservation programs has been provided via Resolution No. R-2014-301 which continued the appropriation for previously approved Capital Projects from FY 2014 to FY 2015.

Funding for the Program is available in account number 42.4000.90408.536.005201.

The Program will run for multiple years from Commission approval and subsequent phases of the program will be presented to the City Commission for consideration and approval.
