Explanation:

The Fire and Beach Safety Department, residents, and employees are honored to present the following Citizens Award of Valor to Lieutenant Kandice Oltz and Firefighter Jennifer Oltz.

On 04/25/2021, Engine 40 and Rescue 40 were dispatched to a pediatric drowning at Dr. Von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson Park.   A 3 year old boy fell in the water and was pulled out by his father. He was unresponsive, not breathing and cyanotic. Lt. Kandice Oltz from the Coral Springs Fire Department, Jen Oltz from the Oakland Park Fire Department and RN Abigail Bushnell (on vacation from Rehoboth, Massachusetts), rendered aid. They began CPR immediately and after 2 rounds of breaths, the boy coughed up water and began to breathe. Upon the arrival of Station 40’s crew, the child was crying and breathing normally. He was still slightly cyanotic. He was quickly transported to Joe DiMaggio with a full HPD escort. Between the distance from station 40 and the heavy weekend traffic, there was a significant delay in arrival.  We are confident that the quick-thinking and action of these three individuals saved the child’s life.
