Explanation:
The Florida Department of Transportation ("FDOT") has completed the construction phase of the Complete Streets Local Initiative which includes improvements along State Road 5/US-1 from Pembroke Road to Sheridan Street. The City and the Community Redevelopment Agency ("CRA") are responsible for the landscaping along this area.
After a variety of meetings and discussions with FDOT, the City was required to submit a variance request for the planting of the trees close to the edge of a curve since the previously approved Transportation Design for Livable Community category designation that offered flexibility in landscaping design options from traditional FDOT projects was abandoned and no longer applicable.
On August 30, 2023, the City Commission passed and adopted Resolution No. R-2023-237 authorizing Bermello Ajamil and Partners, Inc. to provide landscape conceptual design and variance request support for this imitative. The variance request was submitted to FDOT and approved on January 9, 2026.
