Explanation:
The City of Hollywood ("City") acquired approximately 1.41 acres of beach property from Broward County ("County") in 2004 agreeing to maintain and conserve the property in accordance with the requirements of the 2000 Safe Parks and Land Preservation Bond under which the County obtained funding to purchase the property in 2002. The County now seeks the return of the land for environmental mitigation related to projects at Port Everglades. The County intends for the land to continue to be conserved as open space becoming part of the Dr. Von Mizell - Eula Johnson State Park.
The transfer of the land to Broward County will relieve Hollywood of the current obligation to maintain the property and will ensure the property continues to be preserved as open space/recreational land subject to a restrictive covenant. The County will also agree to a perpetual easement for a future recreational trail planned through this area pending approval from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and the City of Dania Beach.
This resolution is to grant approval to place an item on the November 3, 2026 election ballot seeking the approval of the electorate to sell/convey/dispose of the property, in accordance with the City Charter. The proposed ballot language is attached as Exhibit A.
