Linda Gancitano, Physical Education Teacher at Driftwood Academy of Health Sciences was named the Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE) Florida Teacher of the Year. Ms. Gancitano was honored October 16, 2015, at the 2015 SHAPE Florida Convention in St. Pete Beach, Florida. Ms. Gancitano has been an educator for over 25 years and has received recognition as a Florida Green School Teacher of the Year, Driftwood Middle School Teacher of the Year, Broward County Physical Education Teacher of the Year and a White House Climate Education on Literacy Champion of Change.
Ms. Gancitano started the Driftwood Middle School Green Team in 2008 and subsequently created a school-based challenge to reduced energy use called "How Low Can You Go?" which gets students engaged as energy auditors for classrooms. This program has been expanded through a partnership with the Miami Heat NBA team.
Gilberto Amador, Chair of the City of Hollywood Education Advisory Committee, will make a presentation recognizing Ms. Gancitano.
