Strategic Plan Focus
Quality of Life & Strong Neighborhoods
Body
Staff Recommends: Presentation of Proclamation.
Explanation:
Many people now live under a light-polluted sky, yet few are aware of the impacts, which go beyond blocking the sight of stars and disrupting wildlife. It also has significant impact on quality of life that are often overlooked or written off. Light pollution is negatively affecting the half-life of our natural world that needs the night. Scientists have provided us plenty of evidence that link light pollution to global insect decline, death of migrating birds, increased carbon emissions, and disease. Support of this effort are welcomed by those of us engaged in a global movement for night sky and nocturnal environment conservation. Together, we educate and promote ecologically safe and community-friendly lighting for the sake of healthy nighttime environments, money and energy savings, and protection of our cultural heritage of dark skies.
