Staff Recommends: Presentation of Proclamation.

Explanation:

Mental illnesses are biologically based medical problems that disrupt a person’s daily functioning.  Approximately one in five adults will be diagnosed with a mental illness in their life, and only one out of two people with a serious form of mental illness will seek treatment.

Mental health is a crucial issue that affects 450,000 Broward residents and their families.  NAMI (The National Alliance of Mental Illness) offers empowering programs that are available to participants at no charge, yet many families are unaware that mental illnesses are medical illnesses and treatable.

NAMI Broward County’s goal is to bring mental health education and support to all corners of Broward County by:

Offering support groups and encouragement to persons with mental illnesses, and to their families.

Educating families and peers to promote better outcomes.

Advocating for improved opportunities for access to treatment, housing, and meaningful vocational opportunities.

The proclamation will be accepted by Sandra Cumper Boynton, DBH, Executive Director, NAMI Broward County, or a NAMI Broward County representative.

Fiscal Impact:

Approval of this Presentation will not fiscally impact the City.
