Staff Recommends: Presentation of Proclamation.

Explanation:

Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States.  The origin of Juneteenth began in 1865 on June 19th in Galveston, Texas and pays tribute to the day Union General Gordon Granger and 2,000 federal troops arrived in Galveston to take possession of the state and enforce slaves’ new freedoms.  Juneteenth is also known as African American Emancipation Day and is celebrated throughout the United States and beyond.  Juneteenth is a time for reflection, rejoicing, assessment, self-improvement and planning for the future.  The celebration of Juneteenth unites people of all races, religions, and creeds through unity and understanding.  A number of cities and states throughout the country have formed local committees and organizations to celebrate Juneteenth.

The proclamation will be accepted by Georgette Lasley - Founding member of Juneteenth South Broward; and Juneteenth South Broward Board Members.

Fiscal Impact:

Approval of this Proclamation will not fiscally impact the City.
