Explanation:

In 2019 Florida’s first Community Court was created in Broward County by the 17th Judicial Circuit. The Hollywood Community Court will represent an expansion of this innovative initiative within the County. The City has been awarded a 4-year, $532,305.00 U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance Community Courts Initiative grant award to support implementation of the court.

The Hollywood Community Court is expected to begin addressing the needs of homeless, petty crime, and municipal ordinance offenders in January 2024. The court will focus on the root causes of each defendant's issues by offering appropriate therapeutic and social service-based resources and by allowing participants to take an active role in their rehabilitation through community service.

Fiscal Impact:

The grant will fund all salaries and benefits for the addition of a Community Court Coordinator position. The estimated value of the City’s in-kind match is 33.3% or approximately $177,432.00 which is comprised of a portion of full-time Police staff salaries. Grant funding in the amount of $532,305.00 will be recognized and appropriated via a future budget amendment.
