Explanation:
The Department of Public Utilities (Department) needs to replace several 4-inch and 6-inch flange lever and weight check valves used in the Department's Lift Stations (LS). Many of the valves currently in service are worn out, damaged, or no longer functioning as designed. Some no longer close properly, which forces the pumps to run longer and harder than they should. Others are missing weighted arms, which prevents wastewater from flowing in the correct direction. These issues increase strain on pump motors, raise electrical usage, and can cause electrical circuits to overload. Therefore, maintaining properly functioning check valves is essential to protecting public infrastructure and ensuring uninterrupted wastewater collection service.
When LS equipment cannot operate reliably, wastewater cannot be processed efficiently. This can lead to sewer force mains backups or overflows. Such problems can affect both residential neighborhoods and commercial areas, creating potential health hazards, property damage, and service disruptions.
After reviewing available options, the Department determined that Ferguson Enterprises DBA Ferguson Waterworks, is the only supplier that can provide the specific check valves required for these lift stations.
