Body

Staff Recommends:  Approval of the attached Resolution.

Explanation:

The City signed a Memorandum of Understanding (“MOU”) in 2019 with the County partnering with other County municipalities creating a Solid Waste Working Group to recommend strategies and solutions to establish a regional solid waste and recyclables management system based on shared principles and commitments.

In 2022, a first amendment was made to this MOU, providing for joint funding of a regional solid waste generation study.  This study was needed to help in the creation of a coordinated, cost-effective, and environmentally sustainable system by which to dispose of waste and recyclable materials.

The study resulted in Broward County and its municipalities creating the Solid Waste Disposal and Recyclable Materials Processing Authority of Broward County and entering into a long-term agreement to develop and implement an environmentally sustainable, transparent, innovative, and economically efficient plan.

This newly established Solid Waste Disposal and Recyclable Materials Processing Authority of Broward County Governing Board must now have a representative from each participating municipality appointed and one alternative representative to the Governing Board.

Fiscal Impact:

Approval of this Resolution will not fiscally impact the City.
