Explanation:
In response to a 1977 referendum approved by Broward County voters, placing land use planning under the control of the County, the County established its first Comprehensive Plan. The Plan was to guide land development within the County, as well as all municipalities. Municipalities followed by adopting Plans which could only be equal to, or more stringent than the County Plan.

In 1989, in response to State legislation all counties and cities in the State of Florida were required to update their respective Comprehensive Plans to meet specific State mandated concurrency requirements.

Most recently, the Broward County Commission and the Broward County Planning Council have directed their respective staffs to work in conjunction with municipalities and a variety of stakeholders to develop a new Comprehensive Plan for Broward County. The name given to this process is BrowardNext. An Ad Hoc Steering Committee has been appointed by the County Commission to oversee this work effort. The Steering Committee consists of three (3) representatives of the Planning Council (Anne Castro, Chair, School Board member Patricia Good, and Neal de Jesus), two representatives of the Broward League of Cities (Weston Mayor Daniel Stermer and Dania Commissioner Albert Jones), two (2) County Commissioners (Martin David Kiar and Dale Holness) and an ex-officio Urban Planning Expert (Robert 'Bob' Daniels).
