Broward County Public Schools Superintendent Robert W. Runcie was recently named the 2015 Hispanic-Serving School District (HSSD) Superintendent of the Year by the Association of Latino Administrators & Superintendents (ALAS). The mission of ALAS is to provide leadership at the national level that assures every school in America effectively serves the educational needs of all students with an emphasis on Latino youth by building capacity, promoting best practices, and transforming educational institutions. The award honored Superintendent Runcie for setting high standards for instruction and student achievement, his dedication to the students of Broward County, and for engaging the Hispanic community through BCPS initiatives, such as Mi Gente, Mi Escuela and La Universidad - Si Se Puede. The honor was announced at ALAS's First Annual Awards Gala on April 29, 2015 in Washington, D.C.
McArthur High School Principal Todd J. LaPace was selected as the Florida Association of Student Councils' (FASC) Principal of the Year for 2014-2015. Students nominate the candidates for this award and then a selection committee determines the winner on criteria including how the principal positively impacted student government, campus leadership and overall climate of co-curricular activities on campus. The award was given at FASC's 43rd Annual Convention held February 27 - March 1, 2015 at Jefferson High School in Tampa. Mr. LaPace was also a nominee for the Hispanic-Serving School District Administrator of the Year by the Association of Latino Administrators & Superintendents (ALAS).
Sheridan Technical College Assistant Principal Thomas Moncilovich was recently named Broward County Public Schools Assistant Principal of the Year for 2014-2015. Mr. Moncilovich was recognized for his devotion to students, workforce education and institutional advancement. The award was given at the BCPS 2015 Caliber Awards Ceremony on Wednesday, April 1, 2015, at the Greater Fort Lauderdale/Broward County Convention Center in Fort Lauderdale.
Vicky Edgcomb is a Teacher at South Broward High School's Academy of Hospitality & Tourism Management. Ms. Edgcomb was recently honored by the Florida Restaurant & Lodging Association (FRLA) as Hospitality & Tourism Management Program Teacher of the Year for 2014-15. Sarah Beauchamp is an English Teacher and Debate Coach at McArthur High School. Ms. Beauchamp was recently named a Claes Nobel Educator of Distinction by The National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS). The Claes Nobel Educator of Distinction award recognizes teacher role models who have made a lasting difference in their classrooms by encouraging students to strive for excellence. Student members of NSHSS have the opportunity to nominate a single educator who has made the most significant contribution to their academic career. McArthur High student Leslie Gonzalez nominated Ms. Beauchamp for outstanding dedication and commitment to excellence in the classroom. Ms. Beauchamp was honored on March 28, 2015 at an event held at Florida International University in Miami.
Amanda Hicks is a 4th Grade Teacher at Hollywood Hills Elementary School. Ms. Hicks was one of six nominees for Teacher of the Year for 2014-2015 in Broward County Public Schools. She was the sole nominee from a Hollywood school. Winners were announced at the BCPS 2015 Caliber Awards Ceremony on Wednesday, April 1, 2015, at the Greater Fort Lauderdale/Broward County Convention Center in Fort Lauderdale. Ms. Hicks did not win the top honor. However, the Education Advisory Committee believes being nominated for the award from a field of over 7,000 BCPS elementary school teachers is worthy of recognition.
