Staff Recommends: The City of Hollywood Commission recognize May as Historic Preservation Month; and that the following projects and initiatives be recognized for their contributions to protect and conserve historic resources in the City of Hollywood:

1)                     817 Tyler Street

2)                     116 North 13th Avenue

3)                     The Hollywood Historical Society

A Proclamation in recantation of Historic Preservation Month will also be presented.

Explanation:

Historic Preservation Month is celebrated throughout the Country during the month of May. This program was created by the National Trust for Historic Preservation to spotlight preservation efforts by local governments and communities. This year the theme for Preservation Month 2024 is “People Saving Places.”

In recognition of this distinctive time, each year the City of Hollywood Historic Preservation Board and City Commission present awards in celebration of notable preservation initiatives within Hollywood. Selections were made by the Historic Preservation Board.

The following projects and initiatives have been determined by staff and the Historic Preservation Board to be worthy of recognition:

1)                     817 Tyler Street

This building is a historically designated property, originally called the “Fountain Court Apartments”. The architectural style is Mediterranean Revival, built in 1934. It is a two-story multifamily building. There are three buildings surrounding a courtyard, two of them perpendicular to Tyler Street and the north building parallel to the alley, giving the appearance of a “U” shaped structure.

The buildings have been renovated, improving the interior areas to comply with current Code requirements. The exterior alterations maintain the architectural features on the façade. New landscaping has been included as part of the renovation, proposing native plants. This is a good example of restoration, maintaining the original building envelope and its architectural character, while at the same time, making the building more energy efficient.

2)                     116 North 13th Avenue

Nestled on a quaint street corner, Avalon Residences stands as a timeless testament to the elegance of Mediterranean architecture. Built in 1941, this three-story rental building boasts a harmonious blend of stucco walls and terracotta roof tiles evoking a sense of charm and sophistication. Its twenty units, and the parking on the side of the property offer residents a sanctuary of comfort and style.

3)                     The Hollywood Historical Society

The Hollywood Historical Society has launched its Historic Preservation Grant Initiative, providing modest grants to homeowners for preserving, protecting, and restoring historic elements in their residences.

To date the Historical Society has provided grants to various project including St John's Episcopal Church.

In conclusion, Staff recommends that the City of Hollywood Commission officially recognize May as Historic Preservation Month, in alignment with the national celebration established by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Furthermore, Staff recommends that City Commission honor and celebrate the significant contributions of the following projects and initiatives in safeguarding and conserving the rich historical resources within the city: 817 Tyler Street, 116 North 13th Avenue, and the commendable efforts of the Hollywood Historical Society, particularly through its Historic Preservation Grant Initiative. These endeavors exemplify the essence of this year's Preservation Month theme, "People Saving Places," by actively preserving and revitalizing key elements of Hollywood's architectural and cultural heritage.
