Explanation:

Founded by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1956, Sister Cities International is a nonpartisan 501(c)(3) nonprofit which serves as the national membership organization for individual sister cities, counties, and states across the United States. This network unites tens of thousands of citizen diplomats and volunteers in nearly 500 member communities with over 2,000 partnerships in more than 140 countries.

The mission of the Sister Cities program is to promote peace through mutual respect, understanding and cooperation - one individual, one community at a time. The goal of the Sister Cities program is to create and strengthen partnerships between the U.S. and communities around the world through local government cooperation, cultural understanding and economic development activities. The value of face-to-face meetings and personal relationships across boarders helps communities all over the world thrive.

The City Commission has expressed an interest in creating an advisory committee to oversee the Sister Cities program for the City of Hollywood. The City of Hollywood has 9 approved Sister Cities. These cities include: Laayoune, Morocco; Higuey-Punta Cana, Dominican Republic; Vlora, Albania; Romarantin, France; Herzliya, Israel; Baia Mare, Romania; Lecheria, Venezuela; Ciudad de la Costa, Uruguay; and Guatemala City, Guatemala. As many of these relationships were formed years ago, City staff reached out to all of the current Sister Cities to confirm intent to maintain this relationship.

The advisory committee will be composed of 5 members comprised of four at large members and one member from the Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce.  Each committee member shall be a registered voter and resident of Broward County.  They will have an interest in promoting the Sister Cities Program for the City.  All members shall have a strong background in travel, cultural exchange and fund raising, if possible.

The staff liaison will be from the Office of the City Commission.

Fiscal Impact:
