Body

Staff Recommends: The City of Hollywood City Commission recognizes May as Historic Preservation Month and the following projects and initiatives that are contributing to the protection and conservation of historic resources in the City of Hollywood:

1)                     1704 Buchanan Street

2)                     2028 Jackson Street

3)                     1500 Adams Street

Explanation:

Historic Preservation Month is celebrated throughout the country during the month of May. This month of recognition is promoted by the National Trust for Historic Preservation to spotlight preservation efforts by local governments and communities. This year the theme for Preservation Month 2025 is “Harnessing the Power of Place.”

In recognition of this distinctive time, each year the City of Hollywood Historic Preservation Board and City Commission present awards in celebration of notable preservation initiatives within Hollywood. Awardees were determined by the Historic Preservation Board at the March Historic Preservation Board Meeting.

While the City of Hollywood’s Historic Preservation Awards are typically presented to projects that have formally come before the Historic Preservation Board, it should be noted that, although several such projects were reviewed over the past year, none have been fully constructed or completed to the extent required for recognition at this time. Therefore, for 2025, the Historic Preservation Board elected to recognize projects that received grant funding from the Hollywood Historical Society, acknowledging their significant contributions to the preservation and enhancement of the City’s historic resources.

The following projects and initiatives have been determined by the Historic Preservation Board to be worthy of recognition:

1)                     1704 Buchanan Street

St. John's Episcopal Church, a longstanding pillar of our community, received a historic preservation grant for structural restoration and façade improvements. The funding helped preserve the church’s original architectural integrity while ensuring its continued use as a community gathering space.

2)                     2028 Jackson Street

This beautifully preserved home was awarded a grant for exterior restoration, including historically accurate window replacements and repairs to its original. The property stands as an excellent example of residential historic preservation in our city.

3)                     1500 Adams Street

Recognized for its distinctive early 20th-century architectural style, this home received funding for roof restoration and foundation stabilization. The work has not only safeguarded the building but also enhanced its historical character within the neighborhood.

Recipients will be presented with an award recognizing their preservation efforts.

Fiscal Impact:

Approval of this proclamation will not fiscally impact the City.
