Explanation:

On October 13, 1997, Police Officers were sent to a local motel after receiving a 9-1-1 call regarding a possible fugitive, wanted for a triple homicide out of Los Angeles County, California, as seen on America's Most Wanted. Motel management provided the responding officers with the room number where the fugitive was believed to be located. When Police Officers knocked on the door, the fugitive jumped out of the back of the hotel room from a second-story window and fled into the surrounding residential neighborhood.

Officer Kevin Keitz and K9 Kimbo responded to search the area. Upon locating the fugitive, Officer Keitz and K9 Kimbo immediately began taking gunfire. Although K9 Kimbo was shot numerous times, he continued to protect his handler by repeatedly attempting to engage the fugitive before finally succumbing to his wounds.

Officer Keitz returned fire, effectively neutralizing the fugitive, who was armed with two handguns, and ultimately died on scene. Officer Kevin Keitz stated “Kimbo saved my life that day…”

We remember K9 Kimbo for his courage, his service to his handler, the Hollywood Police Department, and to our community.

On March 25, 2026, Commissioner Hernandez proposed naming the dog park at Stan Goldman Memorial Park, located at 800 Knights Road as “K9 Kimbo Dog Park.” The request received City Commission support.

The Naming Policy provides that any proposed naming that is initiated by a City Commissioner shall be placed on a publicly noticed City Commission agenda for consideration without having to first be evaluated by the Naming Review Committee.  The City Commission member who proposes the naming is encouraged to seek community input for the proposed change.
