Explanation:
Adventure Cycling Association (“Association”) is a non-profit organization that promotes and facilitates bicycle travels (website link Discover What Awaits | Adventure Cycling Association <https://www.adventurecycling.org/>). The Association provides free services that engage people in adventures, empower potential adventurers, enable meaningful experiences, provide navigation tools, connect cyclist riders, advocate for better bicycle travel, and inspire people to travel by bicycle.
Since 2003, the Association has been promoting the United States Bicycle Route System (USBRS). The USBRS is a developing national network of bicycle routes connecting urban and rural communities through signed roads and trails. USBRS bicycle routes direct bicyclists to a preferred route through many cities, counties, and states, creating opportunities for people to bicycle for travel, transportation, and recreation. Currently, there are over 18,000 miles of routes established in 34 states and Washington D.C.
Earlier this year, the City was contacted by the Association to support a proposal to realign a portion of the existing USBR-1, which currently runs through the City of Hollywood using A1A from the City’s north boundary to south boundary.
The proposed route will guide bicyclists through the City starting from A1A and traveling east onto Freedom Street, south along North Surf Road, continuing south on the Broadwalk, and then west on Monroe Street back to A1A. The proposed route is intended to provide scenic views of A1A and the Historic Hollywood Beach Broadwalk while allowing for safe and easy maneuverability.
The proposed alignment is derived with consideration of the East Coast Greenway and the Adventure Cycling Atlantic Coast Route. The routes have been used for decades by long-distance cyclists traveling from Maine to Key West.
The Department of Development Services, Engineering, Transportation and Mobility Division has reviewed the proposed route realignment and found it to be a suitable and safe route; therefore, recommending the route be realigned and be officially mapped, promoting bicycle tourism in our community. No street signage is being proposed with the route realignment.
