Staff Recommends: Approval of the attached Resolution.

Explanation:

The City of Hollywood's Education Advisory Committee (“Committee”) was created to help promote and support quality educational opportunities in the City and seeks to make sure the opportunities in Hollywood are among the best available in the State of Florida. Meetings are held on the third Monday of each month, except for August and December, when the Committee is in recess.

Committee members must reside, work, or attend public school in Hollywood, and be known for their Countywide interest in education. Further, persons of diverse perspectives shall be represented on the Committee, including parents of school-age or pre-school-age children, educators, business people, and persons with a background and knowledge in child development and/or education-related fields.

Prior to June 14, 2023, the Committee consisted of 15 total members: four Teacher Members, nine Regular Members, and two Student Alternate Members.

Resolution R-2023-175 increased the membership of the Committee from 15 to 16 and created a student member position.

The current make-up of the Committee is as follows:

Teacher Members: Jeffrey Freeman, Allain Mcguffie and Vincent Newman; and Ellen Suppa whose term expires June 30, 2024 having served on the Committee for nine years.

Regular Members: Candace Beeber and Valorie Weldon; and Lauren Azoulai and Roland Garcia whose terms Expire June 30, 2024; and five vacant positions due to the resignation of Martin Khoury, Richard Petrovich and Jacqueline Grant and the removal of Waldo Mirambeau and Marelise LeClerc.

Student Member: David Liebowitz whose term expires June 30, 2024.

Student Alternate Members:  Brooke Manasse and one vacant position due to the resignation of Wyatt Lohse.

Staff is recommending that the composition of the Committee be changed by eliminating two regular member positions and one student position, thereby establishing the Committee composition of 13 members, and facilitating the ability to reach a quorum for Committee meetings.

Fiscal Impact:

Approval of this resolution will not fiscally impact the City.
